Studies in English - information for candidates

 

Gdynia Maritime University is the largest state university of higher maritime education in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. The Faculty of Navigation offers the degree in Navigation providing program of studies satisfying both Polish educational standards established by the Ministry of Education and also the requirements of the International Maritime Organization – IMO.

The studies are offered in English for foreigners. The necessary condition for undertaking such studies is a sufficient number of candidates, which is determined by the Dean of the Faculty of a given specialization (for the Faculty of Navigation the minimum number of students is 12 now). The payment for the studies is established annually by the Dean of the Faculty. Fees must be paid in EURO into the bank account for the whole academic year in advance. The terms of payment are subject to the legal contract.
The admissions commission of the respective Faculty will conduct the admissions process for candidates.

1. Bachelor degree – 8 semesters
2. Part time studies (extramural)
3. Specialization: Maritime Transport (studies for future Deck Officers) - Program of studies according to STCW 78/95 Convention
4. Payment – required in advance Euro 4000 per year (2 semesters) plus Euro 200 for the enrollment process
5. The fee does not include accommodation and meals
6. The visa process will start once accepted candidates pay the fee
7. Academic year begins 1 October 2010
8. Each semester – about 6 weeks session (one in spring, one in autumn)
9. The studies are to be completed by 30 June 2014
10. Sea practice – compulsory during studies as per STCW 78/95 requirements
11. Students have to write Diploma Thesis to graduate from the studies and get the B.Sc. Diploma
12. All lectures and exercises in English

Accommodation
Students may be provided with accommodation at Gdynia Maritime University’s Student Hostel in shared rooms. The type of a room depends on the availability of rooms currently being at the Dean’s disposal. The cost amounts to EURO 75-100 per month. At the campus there is a canteen open from Monday to Sunday; an average meal costs about EURO 4.

Documents
Candidates for the first year must submit the following documents by the date announced by the admissions commissions of the respective Faculties:
a) The original school-leaving certificate containing an authorization (legalization seal) issued by the appropriate Polish Foreign Service and translated by a certified translator.
b) The document officially recognizing the school-leaving certificate issued in a foreign country confirming its equivalence to the Polish school-leaving certificate.
c) A health certificate confirming suitability of a candidate to study in a given field. The health certificate should be issued by a certified doctor in Poland.
d) Candidates for marine specializations – an international seamen's health certificate appropriate for the specialization a candidate chooses. The health certificate should be issued by a certified doctor in Poland.
e) Candidates cover the expenses of medical examinations and certificates.
f) A certificate of completing the Polish language course or a confirmation of the Polish Language competence (refers to studies in Polish only).
g) A completed form of a personal details questionnaire (ankieta osobowa cudzoziemca).
h) A receipt of non-refundable registration fee of EURO 200.
i) An insurance policy in case of illness or accident for the period of studies in Poland or the European Health Insurance Card.

Acceptance of admission
After completing successfully the admissions process and paying the appropriate fees for the 1st year of studies, a candidate receives a certificate of being accepted for the studies (Admission Letter).
By the definite term announced by the Dean’s office of the respective Faculty, a student is obliged to submit a visa, resident permit or some other document entitling them to stay in the territory of the Republic of Poland.
The final decision concerning the admission for studies is made after undersigning a legal contract between the candidate and the University.

The aforementioned documents should be submitted directly in the respective Dean’s Office.

The decision to accept an applicant for the studies is taken by Vice Rector for Education.
